Cohen's First Solid Food

A few weeks back, Dec 6th to be exact, Cohen had his first taste of solid food - rice cereal. He did really well and quickly graduated to Oatmeal and Mixed Baby Cereal. Yesterday, he got his first bite of squash. He didn't seem to know quite what to think of the squash, but ate it anyway. :o)

Christmas

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas together as a family of 4! This was really the first year that Carson "got" Christmas. He opened presents and was truly excited to discover what was inside each gift! It was so much fun to watch him this year!

Carson's First Trip to the Snow

While we were down in Southern California visiting my family for Christmas, we took Carson and his cousin Alec (with my two sisters and their husbands) up to Big Bear to play in the snow. We found a great little snow park (just $5 per car to get in) to go sledding at near Big Bear Lake.

We all had a great time. It was a beautiful, sunny day.

We went sledding,

threw snowballs,

built a snowman

and made snow angels.

5 months old!

Cohen turned 5 months old this week!

He's now sleeping through the night pretty consistently. We put him down to bed around 8-9pm and he wakes up around 7am. It's great! We started him on rice cereal about 2 weeks ago and now he's eating oatmeal and mixed baby cereals as well. He seems to like it.

Cohen is really strong. He loves to play on his stomach and is reaching and scooting along the floor to reach toys (he's been rolling over in both directions for quite awhile now as well). The exersaucer and jumperoo are also getting good use these days! But his absolute favorite thing is to have someone hold him and talk to him. His face lights up and he has the best smile and laugh!

Being a Big Brother

For the most part, Carson is happy to be a big brother. He brings Cohen toys and even lies down under the dangling toys of the playmat beside Cohen to play with him. When I'm changing Cohen only to find that there are no more diapers at the changing table - Carson will bring me one from the bedroom - he's really a great helper. But Carson's help isn't always appreciated.

Carson likes to "go". It doesn't really matter where. He just wants to get out of the house. Take him outside to ride his bike, walk to the mailbox at the end of the driveway, to the grocery store, to the park or just drive to the post office. He just wants to "go" somewhere. I've learned to be very careful not to tell Carson we are "going" somewhere until we are literally ready to head out the door. But sometimes I forget.

Not too long ago I told Carson we were ready to "go", I just needed to get Cohen into his carseat. Cohen was in the swing at the time. So, Carson ran over to the swing, flipped up the tray and unbuckled Cohen! If all the what keeping us from "going" was getting Cohen - well Carson would take care of that little detail! Thankfully, I made it over in time before Cohen came spilling out of the swing and onto the floor! You'd think I'd learn my lesson. But no.

Last week, I told Carson we were going to the grocery store, but we had to wait for Cohen to finish taking his nap. So what does any good big brother do (one that wants to "go")? Carson runs down the hall to the bedroom where his little brother is sleeping and shakes the cosleeper where Cohen is sleeping and yells "up! go! up! go!". Which of course abruptly wakes Cohen from his peaceful slumber a good 20 minutes early. And off to the grocery store we go all the while discussing how Mommy is the only one who should wake up Cohen from his nap from now on.

Cohen is rolling over already!

Cohen is 3 months old today and has been rolling over from his stomach onto his back for over a week now! It's crazy. Carson didn't roll over until he was 4 months old! I'm working on getting some video footage of the newest milestone - Cohen is a little camera shy - he won't roll over until just after I turn off the camera! I'll have to sneak up on him. I'm a bit worried that I've got another active little boy on my hands!

Trains on YouTube

We've found a new way to entertain Carson while we're making dinner - let him watch YouTube videos of trains, construction equipment, boats....really anything that GOES! He loves it and it keeps him out of the kitchen!

2 months old!

Cohen had his 2 month Dr. Appt last week. He weighed in at 10 pounds and 2 ounces and 22.5 inches long. He has started "talking" to us now - mostly "goos" and "gaas". He really likes it when we sit down and talk to him - he smiles a lot. He's got good head control for being 2 months old and can almost lift his head 90 degrees when he's lying on his stomach. He's waking up twice during the night now - once at midnight and again at about 4am. So I'm getting a little more sleep, but am still really looking forward to him sleeping through the night! It's tough chasing a toddler all day and then not getting more than 3 or 4 hours of sleep at a time! But overall we're doing well.

Cohen's First Hike

This last weekend we went to Pinnacles National Monument for a short hike with the kids. It was Cohen's first hike. He slept most of the way in the baby bjorn. It hardly seems like any time has passed since Carson went on his first hike to the Pinnacles!

We did a short, easy trail because we didn't want to have to carry Carson in the backpack. But is was nice to get out! Carson loved it! He kept running ahead and looking back to see if we were coming. Very cute.

Nina! Nina!

We are so blessed to have our friends as neighbors!

Today, Carson went to play with his friend Nina next door while I finished up some grading for my class (thank you so much Sarah!). Carson and Nina are really great friends. They love to play together! And today, for the first time, Carson called Nina by her name! Nina dropped her blanket when playing outside and Carson went and picked up the blanket and ran after her with it calling "Nina! Nina!" after her. He caught up with her and handed her the blanket. It was so sweet!

Summer Fun

Here's some footage of Carson playing in his pool.

6 weeks old

Cohen is 6 weeks old! He's starting to smile and interact with us a little more now - even starting to enjoy being on the playmat.

Getting Bigger!

Cohen had his 2 week appointment this week and weighed in at 8lbs 2oz! He's gained almost a pound since we left the hospital (he weighed 7lbs 3oz the day we came home). So apparently he's getting enough to eat - it's so hard to tell when you're breastfeeding! Makes me feel a lot better to know he is gaining weight and doing well. Cohen is starting to sleep more at night now, which is good. He's eating about every 3-4 hours at night (2 night time feedings) and every 2-3 hours during the day.

Carson is starting to adjust to having a baby brother. He gives Cohen a kiss goodnight at bedtime, which is really sweet. Bedtime and naptime have been a bit rough for Carson since Cohen arrived. Carson has had a really tough time falling asleep and staying in bed when he hears Cohen crying. We're starting to see some improvement, but it's slow progress. Overall though, I think Carson is adjusting well, it's just going to take time.

Up

We took Carson to see his first movie this week - the Pixar film "Up". We had no idea how he would do - he doesn't watch much TV at home and sitting still isn't really his thing. But he did do really well. He seemed fascinated by the big screen, although a little weirded out by the dark and other people. But the bag of popcorn seemed to seal the deal. For the first half of the movie, he happily watched the movie, munching on popcorn and pointing.

Enter the mean dogs. Every cartoon movie has it's scary part. Up has scary, mean dogs. This totally freaked Carson out. First he climbed on Daddy's lap and when the mean dogs didn't go away, Chris took him out to the hall. We tried unsuccessfully to bring him back in, but everytime the dogs came on or there was a loud noise, Carson got upset. So we had to leave. It was a bummer, but totally understandable. He just didn't get that they weren't real. We'll give him a little more time and then try it again.

Check out my pedaling skills!

I've had my bike for a little over a month now. It took a little bit of practice, but I'm really starting to get the hang of this bike riding thing. It's a lot of fun, especially when dad rides his bike with me!

Playing

Here are my newest videos. The first one is of me and my friend (and neighbor) Nina playing in the office chair while listening to music.

This video is of me climbing on my play structure outside and playing with my trains.

My Museum

We found this great place in Monterey called My Museum. It's just for kids! There are so many cool things to do! They have a tree house with a slide, mini golf, a construction site and an ambulance that I can drive! The ambulance is my favorite. You can turn on the sirens and lights and everything.

My new bed

This week I got a new bed. Totally cool - no more baby crib for me! I'm a little bummed though - I had just figured out how to escape from the crib. Oh well. I'm sure I'll be able to teach my little brother or sister my climbing technique.

Dinnertime Conversation

Toddler Class

Exploring Times is the new toddler class I'm taking with Mommy at the Salinas Adult School. We've been going to these classes since I was 4 months old. It's pretty cool. All of the kids in the class are my age and there are a ton of activities. We have inside playtime where we work on puzzles and crafts and play with the many fun toys in the classroom. Then we have snack time, outside playtime (my favorite) and finally song time. Here is a video clip of me at Exploring Times.

First Haircut

Today I got my first haircut. Daddy said I had a mullet and that it was time for a haircut, so mom took me to the hair salon to get my haircut. I really didn't like having someone touch my hair and the back of my head. But mom gave me fruit snacks. Need I say more?
